28 July, Alice Munro

Walking back from the GP with a script for Prednisolone in hand. Somewhat morbid to duck into the graveyard and sit on a fallen stone, but I was dizzy and wheezing and about to fall over, and better out of sight than on the narrow sidewalk choked with car exhaust.

And look – Alice Munro! Her Who Do You Think You Are? was one of my favorites in grad school. She has a wonderfully clear eye for real life, writing women who are grasping after exciting experience but only make infidelity and adventure into more of a grind than their mundane lives. The reminder of better days cheered me up muchly.
